I am a professional church hopper. I have been a catholic, an adventist, a unitarian, a congregationalist, a presbyterian, a lutheran, an evangelical,
a campbellite, and a methodist.
I have left churches out of anger, offense, pastoral change, conflict, boredom, and theological growth. Eg., I left 7th day adventism because of opposition research and because the minister was very much a fundamentalist
of Ellen G. White. In some ways I am every minister's worst nightmare. Two things are worth noting- first, I have never opposed a pastor, criticized a pastor, or made life difficult for a pastor. Second, I feel, at times, an overwhelming sense that Christ is to be pursued outside the church- that church is meaningless. Not merely boredom, but a exsitential feeling that to be a follower of Christ is to be diametrically oppsed to the church. That is worth taking seriously, even from me.
